Stamford Public Education Foundation is Hiring a Paraprofessional Near Stamford, CT

Location: Hart Magnet Elementary School, 61 Adams Ave, Stamford, CT 06902 (Subject to change)

Employment type: Part-time, Non-Exempt, Temporary

Anticipated Schedule (Subject to Change):

  • Wednesday, June 26 - 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 27 - 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Weekdays (Monday-Friday), July 1-August 2, - 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Closed: July 4 and July 5

Reporting to: Director, Summer Start

Program Summary

Summer Start is a five-week half-day program for four- and five-year-old children who have not had the benefit of a formal preschool experience. Engaging classroom activities are combined with theme-based, hands-on projects and fun field trips to build math and literacy skills (aligned with Connecticut Core State Standards). Summer Start gives preschoolers an opportunity to learn classroom routines while interacting socially with fellow rising kindergarten students. The Summer Start experience can help lessen the anxiety and stress some children feel when starting kindergarten. Studies show that preschool instruction sets a strong foundation for future academic and social success.

Position Summary

The Summer Start Paraeducator is responsible for assisting the Classroom Teacher with the delivery of instructional and related services to students. The Paraeducator will assist in all administrative support, monitoring of classroom activities, and preparing and handling all materials and projects. They will work closely with the Classroom Teacher to provide all students with a healthy learning environment in order to be successful in Kindergarten.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Work with individual students or small groups of students under the supervision of a certified teacher, to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher
  • Follow student schedule, as written by certified staff, i.e. administrators, teachers, resource, etc. and seek clarification as needed
  • Assist the teacher(s) in the handling, operation, and care of equipment used in the classroom, including media and instructional materials
  • Assist the teacher(s) with non-instructional duties, such as serving breakfast and snacks
  • Assist the teacher(s) in instructional skilla work, large group reading, and/or storytelling
  • Alert the teacher(s) regarding any issue or special information related to an individual student
  • Perform support duties as assigned by the teacher(s) as needed
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and sensitivity of information about students as is expected of a certified teacher or assistant teacher
  • Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction as needed
  • Assist in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning school environment
  • Talk to and attempt to calm student(s) who are distressed
  • Help with the arrival and dismissal routine
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned

Qualifications & Skills

  • Pass the ParaPro Assessment, hold an Associate Degree, or have completed at least 60 hours at an accredited college and/or university
  • Experience with early childhood education preferred (e.g. pre-school/Kindergarten)

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of standing, kneeling, or sitting on the floor with students may be required.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
